A Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations implementation touches finance, procurement, inventory, sales and often production. Getting it right is about more than software. Use this checklist to keep your project on track.
1. Discovery & planning
- Define measurable business goals (e.g. close the books in 5 days instead of 10)
- Identify an executive sponsor and dedicated process owners
- Document current-state processes and pain points
- Agree scope: legal entities, modules, countries, integrations
- Choose your implementation partner and methodology
2. Solution design
- Run fit-gap workshops per process area
- Decide configure vs. customize vs. ISV for every gap
- Design chart of accounts, financial dimensions and organization hierarchy
- Write a solution blueprint and integration architecture
- Plan environments (development, test, UAT, production) and ALM
3. Build
- Configure modules in a “golden” configuration environment
- Develop extensions using Chain of Command, never overlayering
- Build integrations with data entities, OData or Business Events
- Build SSRS / Electronic Reporting formats and Power BI dashboards
- Hold regular conference-room pilots (CRPs) with business users
4. Data migration
- Map legacy data to D365 data entities
- Clean master data: customers, vendors, items, BOMs
- Build repeatable DMF data packages
- Run at least two full mock migrations and reconcile results
5. Testing
- Unit and integration testing
- End-to-end process testing (procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, record-to-report)
- Performance testing for high-volume processes
- User acceptance testing with sign-off
- Automate regression with RSAT
6. Training & go-live
- Role-based training and quick-reference guides
- Security roles and segregation of duties reviewed
- Detailed cut-over plan with go/no-go criteria
- Hypercare support plan for the first 4–8 weeks
7. After go-live
- Monitor batch jobs, integrations and performance
- Plan for Microsoft service updates
- Build a continuous-improvement backlog
